$5,500 per pupil vs $22,000 per inmate

Just a 5% increase in Nevada’s male graduation rate equates to $75+ million per year in crime-related savings and additional revenue.

85% of Juvenile inmates are functionally illiterate and in many states, the number of prison cells built are determined by third grade reading proficiencies. Presently, Nevada spends $5,500 for guaranteed per pupil funding per year versus $22,000 per inmate per year. More alarming is the fact that the cost of a juvenile inmate is almost twice that of an adult inmate. This makes the amount the state contributes for a prisoner under the age of 18 about 8 times the amount the state spends per pupil. If we can invest in our children early with quality pre-kindergarten and full day kindergarten programs, we can improve the amount of graduates by the thousands. And when the amount of graduates are on the rise, the amount of taxpayer money the state spends on the prison system and social programs like welfare and Medicare can decrease dramatically.
